Fall is an ideal time to review your oral health strategy, as it brings a renewed energy after the long days of summer. Our team at C.R. The ADA (American Dental Association) advises that patients brush at least twice a day for two minutes each session using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use a brush with a small enough head to reach and clean the back areas of the mouth where the molars lie.
To clean, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and “massage” all tooth surfaces. Take a moment to clean your tongue as well since it harbors bacterial residue. This also helps freshen your breath!
Next, floss! Your toothbrush can’t clean between the teeth or gumline, but dental floss can. Floss once a day to get rid of dental plaque, a bacterial biofilm. Left alone, plaque will harden into tartar or calculus which your dentist will have to remove.
Adding a germ-fighting mouthwash to your daily routine also clears away plaque. Choose one without alcohol to avoid drying out the mouth. This will support your battle against tooth decay and gum disease.
Another pro tip for your oral health is to chew sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after you eat. This chewing action stimulates saliva production. Saliva washes residual food particles and oral debris from the mouth, while also effectively neutralizing harmful acids released by oral bacteria.
